K-056 Sheran, Syria
1 | Ez **** me. e-j gundê şeranê me. Gundê şeranê gundekî hinekî mezin e. miletê xwe teqrîben ji panzdeh ḥezarî ḥeta bîst ḥezar e. |
I am ****. I’m from Sheran village. Sheran village is quite a big village. Its population is approximately between fifteen and twenty thousand.
2 | Malê me di nîvê gund e; nêzîkî camê mezin e. şarʕeke ṭenge pêş male me ra darê. Ew şarʕe ji ser pî rastê darî ḥeṭa şuẋlê ṣeḍ mitroî ti pêş da harî pera ser pî te-î rastê ew şarʕa di pêş camê mazin ra dare. Camî mezin li ser pî te-î ç’epê dikeve. |
Our house is in the middle of the village; it is close to the big mosque. A narrow street passes in front of our house. That street on the right hand side, goes forwards for up to a hundred meters, then on your right hand side the street passes in front of the big mosque. The big mosque is located on your left hand side.
3 | Ku ti ji gundê me derdikevî, dorî gundî me gişkî ʕerdî ê ç’andinê ne. bilʕadê, ʕerdê me gî bejî ne, yenî em diç’înin diç’înin le ser baranê ew ʕerdana k’esk dibin û meḥṣûlê wa tê di havînê da. |
If you go outside our village, (you would notice that) all the lands around our village are for cultivation. All our lands are usually rainfed, I mean we are cultivating and cultivating and the land becomes green depending on the rain water and they (villagers) get the crops in summer.
4 | Lê berî ç’end salan, şuẋlî deh salan ḥeṭa panzde salan ew hebûn berî ku mazoṭ li Sûrî buha bibê, ʕerdê avî li cem me hebû. |
However, several years earlier, about ten to fifteen years and before the cost of diesel became expensive in Syria; we used to have irrigated lands.
5 | Wexta ʕerda avî hebûn, me ew diç’andin pembî diç’and. Pembî li cem me rind bû, pembî li cem xweşik rind dibû serkê xwe wa mezin dibû ew p’elê xwe qewir û mezin dibû. |
When there were irrigated lands, we used to cultivate cotton. Cotton was good in our area where the cotton bolls used to be big and its leaves used to be big and grey.
6 | ṭebʕen ew pemîya ewê mehê nehan talîyê mehe ḥeyştan mehê nehan, milet k’om dikir dikire bendekan k’om dikirin pera dikire k’amyonan û dişandin ewe, dişandin cem ḥik’ûmetê difrotin. |
Naturally, by the ninth month or the end of the eighth month, people used to collect it (the cotton) and put it in bags, and then they used to load it in trucks and send it to the government to sell.
7 | Fe şêran dûre K’obanê teqrîben ḥeft k’îlomitran e ḥeft kîlometran. ma bênê K’obanê û şêranê ṭebʕen riyê zift e rê zifte. heg ti şêranê here K’obanê berî K’obanê gundekî çuk heye navê xwe ḥelence, qerḥelenc jêr dibêjin yan ḥelenc. |
Sheran is about 7km from Kobane. Certainly, the road between Kobane and Sheran is asphalted. If you go from Sheran to Kobane, there is a small village before Kobane called Helenj, it is either called Qerhelenj or Helenj.
8 | Ew gunda ji hinekî yeʕnî çûk e ew şuxlî pen-şeş ḥezar milete. |
That village is quite small too and it has about five to six thousand people.
Then, you head toward Kobane. Kobane, in and of itself, is somewhat big; I mean its population nowadays would be eighty thousand… there are seventy to eighty thousand people in Kobane itself.
10 | K’obanê meʕrûfe bi ewê xwe… bi ẋerazê xwe. ẋeraze ç’ine lê? ẋeraze ê hane ku ti ewa ji hesin ç’êdikin dikarin pê bîran dik’olin. |
Kobane is known for those things… for its excavators. What are excavators? (rhetorical question) Excavators are those things you make from iron so they can dig wells by them.
11 | Bîrê seybî avê ji ʕerdê derdixin. ṭebe ew ẋeraza gişkîyan didne ser qelabakê ya kaş dikin bi trakt’oran darin wa bîran dik’olin seybî avê. |
Wells to draw water from the ground. Certainly, all those excavators are usually loaded on trucks or towed by tractors and go in order to dig wells for water.
12 | Bîr ḥesebî ciye ji ṣed mîtroî ḥeṭa dişid mîtoî ḥeṭa seṣiḍ mîtoî ḥesebî cî û av derdik’evê. |
The well, depending on the area, could be a hundred meters to two hundred meters… to three hundred meters. It depends on the area and the access to water.
13 | ê va miletê me ç’î… yeʕnî ewya mihna reɁîsî miletî me dikê, fe milet va ẋerazana birna derva ji, birna… selen birnaTirkî li wêde k’olan birna K’urdistana ʕîraqê. |
That is to say it is the main profession that our people do, so people took these excavators abroad too. For example, they took them to Turkey and Iraqi Kurdistan to dig (wells).
14 | Berî wê ç,aẋê berî Tirkî û Kurdistanê, çûne ewê Lîbîya û Meẋrib û Cezayir. ḥeṭa niha hîn miletê me li wê de re li Cezayer heye. Li CezaɁir ew ẋeraza dik’olin ṭebʕen pê rizqê xwe k’om dekin li Lîbya wana. |
Before that time… before Turkey and Kurdistan, (they) went to Libya, Morocco and Algeria. Till present day, our people are still there, in Algeria. In Algeria, certainly they dig wells by excavators to earn their livelihood. They do so in Libya and other places.
15 | Birê mi jî hîn eṣlen li Cezayire li wê de re ew jî dişuẋulê. Birê mi li Meẋribe we ji li ser ẋeraza werga dişuẋulê |
My brother is still in Algeria where he works. My brother (another brother) is in Algeria and he works on excavators as well.
16 | Fe Kûbanê li ser ḥidûdî Tirkî û Sûrî ye, yeʕnî şerqî Cerablosê bi teqrîben sîh û penc k’ilo mitra ne. |
Kobane is on the border between Turkey and Syria, that is to say it is located to the East of Jarablos by about thirty five kilometers
17 | Cerablos yeʕnî gundekî ʕereb û Kurmanc tê da ne eẋlebê xwe ʕerebin. yeʕnî Cerablos ẋerbî Ferête, gundê li şerqî Ferêt gişkî Ina dibine Kurmanc. |
It is to say that Jerablos includes Arabs and Kurds, yet the majority are Arabs. I mean that Jarablos is located to the west of Euphrates; all of the villages located to the east of Euphrates are Kurdish.
18 | Gişî… Zormeẋare… gunde yekê han li şerqî Ferêt nave xwe Zormeẋare gişkî Kurmanc û werga ti şerqî da tê şuxlê sîh û penc k’îlo mitra ḥeṭ ti digihê Kûbanê gişkî Kurmanc in. |
(Hesitation)… the first village to the East of Euphrates is called Zormexare where all its residents are Kurds and as you come eastwards by about 35km and till you reach Kobane are all Kurds.
19 | Û me go Kobanê li ser ḥidûdê Tirkî û Sûrî yi, ewan li bakurî Surî, ṭebʕen Kûbanê tabʕe ewê ye ḥelebe dûre ḥeleb teqrîben ç’iqaṣ seḍ û ḥeyştê k’ilo mitrî. |
And, as we said, Kobane is on the border between Turkey and Syria. Naturally, Kobane belongs to Aleppo (governorate). It is far from Aleppo, about 180km. |
